The trade union for education professionals has been central to our campaign and we are grateful for everything they have done so far.
The trade union for Council staff has been brilliant, helping us lobby councillors, directing us to essential documents and reports, and offering us much needed financial support.
"Libraries are a lifeline for the women and children we support and at Juno we know this because survivors tell us. Libraries are the place from where so many survivors are signposted to vital services such as Juno WA and many, many others. A place where families who have fled to a new area can access information, connect with other parents and children at local activities and begin to rebuild a network of community and support after fleeing violence and abuse. A place for children and women to gain digital access and access to learning materials as well as books. The value of libraries cannot always be quantified and measured. They are literally a lifeline for so many."
"Women are particularly disadvantaged by the closure of public libraries. The impact of library closures are practical, educational, social and cultural, especially for the most disadvantaged in our community. Libraries are essential community spaces, providing free safe spaces, sources of information, education, as well as access to books and other media, and for digital access. For women who are experiencing social isolation or abuse, needing support as parents, carers or for their own wellbeing a library can be a vital safety net."
"Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum wholeheartedly supports the campaign to save Nottingham’s libraries. The libraries offer vital facilities to refugees and asylum seekers – a safe place where they can access free services, including advice, English conversation classes and educational resources. Libraries are safe havens where they are able to spend time without being questioned on their right or entitlement to be there. We want to keep libraries across Nottingham open as they represent sanctuary, peace, hope and aspiration to those who escaped war and persecution, and are rebuilding their lives in our community."
"The loss of the local libraries of Basford, Aspley and Radford is very worrying to us at Basford Road Baptist Church and we therefore support the Save Nottingham Libraries campaign. Libraries are much more than just the lending of books. They host a whole range of different activities providing support to those who need it the most - from new parents to the jobless; to those who do not have access to computers or printers; to school children needing help with home work; to those who need support or those who just need to go somewhere warm. The libraries have a crucial role to play and are valued by the church community and to lose them would be a bitter blow for the area."
"Thomas Helwys Baptist Church supports the campaign to save Nottingham’s libraries. Libraries are not just places from where people can borrow books. They are community hubs. They provide information on support services, computer access for benefits, job hunting and homework, a place of warmth for those unable to heat their homes and a place of safety for those who are vulnerable. Libraries are places of books, groups, learning and aspiration. If libraries are allowed to close the communities around them will be poorer for their loss."
"Basford, Aspley, and Radford/Lenton Libraries are under threat of closure by Nottingham City Council. Libraries offer far more than books. They support literacy and provide resources for people to expand their knowledge, apply for jobs/housing/benefits as well as encouraging imagination, providing information, space, warmth, and safety. They are a community space in a world where public space is quickly diminishing."
"St Aidan's Church and the Community Café at St Aidan's CIC in Basford support the campaign to Save Nottingham Libraries. Our local library in Basford is a valued part of our community, offering a gathering place for groups and individuals to socialise, learn, access the internet, meet our local councillors, borrow books, find out about local activities, and above all find a warm, safe local environment. A LOCAL library is vitally important for access by local residents without incurring transport costs. Furthermore, the Basford library is in a historic building, in a beautiful location, adjacent to Vernon Park.."
"Libraries are more than just a place where people can borrow books. Libraries are at the centre of our communities, where groups are held and information shared. They are spaces that are accessible for all members of the community, including families with young children, the elderly, disabled, and those who may already have limited access to safe community and social spaces. Libraries are vital for educational, social and mental health wellbeing. For people who have experienced sexual violence or who are unsafe at home, we know that libraries are a place of sanctuary and warmth, where signposting to vital services such as ours can and does happen. While library books provide the opportunity for escape, computer access helps people claim benefits, apply for training and work. The value of local libraries to survivors of sexual violence cannot be measured and their existence should never be under threat."
